Giveaways, Takeaways, and Throwaways

Game 2 re-cap in a neat little package

There are many “ways” to break down any athletic contest but for me, it comes down to the Big Three: Giveaways, Takeaways, and Throwaways.  Game 2 of the Warriors-Blazers series was, on the surface, a bit of a dud. For your enjoyment, I explore new "ways" to look at the game.

Portland was all too generous with the rock in their 110-81 loss to the Warriors in Game 2 of the Western Conference playoffs. The Blazers turned it over 18 times, nine of which were committed by star guard tandem Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Add to the mix the fact that those two combined to score just 23 points on 34 shots and you’ve got a solid recipe for success.

The Warriors giveaways were much more obtuse. It was playing time that was given away with the decision to rest Kevin Durant (calf strain) and Shaun Livingston (hand issues). Patrick McCaw filled in admirably for KD in the starting lineup, racking up nine points and five rebounds in 34 minutes. Ian Clark got 25 minutes and scored 13 off the bench although much of that came late in garbage time.

Draymond Green was a dynamic force again, scoring just 6 points but dishing out 10 assists to go with a stout 12 rebounds. His three blocked shots were second only to Javale McGee, whose 15 point performance (7-for-7 floor) was punctuated by his four swats. Even Stephen Curry (team-high 19 points) was credited with one of the team’s 11 blocks.

Congratulations to rookie Damian Jones, who scored his first playoff point late in the 4th quarter. After playing just 10 games during the regular year, the rook was able to get burn because of the three rotation players who were out due to injury.

The Amazing Sladek put on a truly AMAZING halftime performance, stacking chairs on a platform more than 30 feet high, climbing the fragile structure and doing handstands along the way. Incredible balance, poise, and strength in a simple yet riveting performance of old school acrobatics . You can find him on Twitter @amazingsladek

As Homer Simpson once said, “Well then, everything is wrapped up in a neat little package.”
