Greg Papa remembers the exact date he found out that Jon Gruden wanted to return to the Raiders. It was Dec. 13, 2009.

Mike Tirico, Gruden’s then-partner on “Monday Night Football” on ESPN, was having his birthday party at Ricky’s Sports Theatre and Grill in San Leandro when it all went down.

Here’s the full story, as told on “The Greg Papa Show” with Bonta Hill on 95.7 The Game on Tuesday afternoon:

“So, we all go to Ricky’s and Jon’s in his element now. He’s back with the Raider Nation…”

“Everybody who’s an ex-Raider is there and I’m there. And Jon’s had quite a bit to drink that night and he’s in my ear, ‘You gotta go to the old man and tell him I want to come back.’”

Papa conceded that at that point, he never imagined Davis would do such a thing. But he knew that’s what the former coach wanted.

“Just listening to him and the gleam in his eye, I always felt like he did want to come back here. He did. I felt like it was to him, unfinished business.”

Papa said Davis told him that Gruden called twice that offseason and asked to return. Davis’ response to Papa?

“I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about it.”
