Most Notable

Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster both played extensively in their professional debuts. Thomas needed reps after missing the offseason program and signing his rookie contract during the 49ers first training camp practice. Thomas played both defensive end and defensive tackle and was on the field deep into the fourth quarter. His night highlighted by a QB pressure that led to Rashard Robinson’s interception.

Reuben Foster started at “WILL” linebacker next to NaVorro Bowman and also saw time at “MIKE” linebacker backing Bowman up. His nose for the football was on display again in pass coverage as he narrowly missed an interception in the end zone that would have thwarted a Kansas City drive.

The Good

A lighter Aaron Lynch was credited with two sacks against the Chiefs second unit and looked he could be a nice fit as a rotation player at defensive end playing more limited snaps.

Joe Williams and Matt Breida. The 49ers appear to have a talented duo of young running backs with Joe Williams rushing for 60 yards on seven carries and Matt Breida running for 40 yards on 11 touches.

C.J. Beathard was a poised 7-for-11 for 101 yards and two TD’s as the third string QB.

The Bad

The Chiefs first team offense went after 49ers number one cornerback Rashard Robinson early and often during their opening drive. Tyreek Hill beat Robinson for a 32-yard catch on the first play of the game and Robinson missed a tackle on third-down, which set Kansas City up for a touchdown. Robinson later rebounded with an interception but the lack of experience and depth for the 49ers at corner is a major weakness heading into the season.

The 49ers first team offense didn’t pick up a first down. Brian Hoyer was 1-for-4 for 3 yards. The second unit had a touchdown called back on a penalty and stalled in the red zone twice on the same possession following a Chiefs penalty.

The 49ers committed 17 penalties for 131 yards.
