Yonder Alonso goes from afterthought to All-Star

1st baseman to appear in Midsummer Classic in his adopted hometown

In the midst of a career year, Yonder Alonso is set to represent the Oakland A's at the All-Star game later this month. The annual exhibition will be held on July 11 at Marlins Park in Miami — the first baseman's adopted hometown.

Alonso said he teared up when manager Bob Melvin delivered the news after calling the veteran into his office some 30 minutes before first pitch on Sunday afternoon. Alonso called his wife first then reached out to his parents immediately after. 

With 17 home runs, Alonso has already shattered his previous career high of nine. 

“From a personal level, it definitley feels rewarding," Alonso said. "You're looking at a guy who almost got non-tendered last year to a guy now in the middle of the lineup playing the game and full of confidence.”
