‘Someone needs to be fired’ — Papa goes off after Raiders’ Thursday night debacle

Final Battle of the Bay proved to be entirely forgettable for Jon Gruden’s club

In the wake of the Raiders’ stunning 34-3 loss to the 49ers on Thursday Night Football in Santa Clara, Greg Papa had a lot to say on his show with Bonta Hill.

Per usual, the former voice of the Raiders did not hold back in his assessment.

“After a performance like that, someone needs to be fired to shake up the building,” Papa said on 95.7 The Game. “And you’re firing players. Maybe you need to cut a few guys. I don’t know.”

Amid the beatdown, TV cameras caught Gruden torching Paul Guenther, his defensive coordinator.

“But you’re probably not going to make a change on the defensive side. You brought Gunther in. He had other opportunities. So it’s just — that was really a disappointing (game). I’m not — it’s not a lack of effort — you have to be more, you have to look at it a little closer.”

For what it’s worth, Gruden offered the following when asked about his DC, and the exchange, during his Friday media debrief at club HQ in Alameda.

“They’re inept. They’re playing inept football,” Papa continued. “I think they got down at some points in the game, there’s no doubt. But to say they’re not trying, you’re not trying. Look at what (they’re doing). They’re playing pro football here.”

“They just were not prepared on the short week. I thought they’d have the advantage off the bye, but they really are right now an extremely poorly coached football team.”
