Heyman: Giants target Kotsay as ‘strong candidate’ to replace Bochy

As the Giants begin what is expected to a protracted pursuit for Bruce Bochy’s successor, Mark Kotsay, the former A’s outfielder turned green and gold coach, has catapulted into the conversation.

Kotsay has ties to both Farhan Zaidi, Giants president of baseball ops, and Bochy. The former outfield overlapped with Zaidi in Oakland, starting in 2005.

Kotsay, who spent three seasons of his 17-year career under Bochy in San Diego, has been on the staff of Bob Melvin four the past four campaigns. Hired as the bench coach heading into 2016, Kotsay held that post until June of 2017 when he took a leave of absence to attend to his daughter who had suffered an eye injury.

For the past two seasons, Kotsay was Oakland’s quality control coach.
