The San Francisco Giants officially shipped out Andrew McCutchen —  one of the club’s premier offseason additions — on Friday morning. The deal was first reported on Thursday by ESPN's Buster Olney.

Heading into the weekend one game under .500 (67-68) and 7.5 games off the pace in the NL West, the Giants sent McCutchen to the AL East in exchange for minor league infielder Abiatal Avelino and minor league right-handed pitcher Juan De Paula.

To take McCutchen’s spot on the 25-man roster, San Francisco summoned Chris Shaw from Triple-A Sacramento. The No. 4 prospect on the Giants’ farm, per MLB.com, had 24 long balls in 101 games.

Leading into what promises to be a busy offseason, the move gives the Giants a month to audition Shaw, in an effort to see what type of role he’ll play in the team’s future.

Avelino, the No. 23 prospect in the Yankees’ system per MLB.com, has spent the year between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In his two stops, the 23-year old totaled a .287 batting average,13 doubles, eight triples, 15 home runs, 66 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 122 games.

De Paula, a 20-year-old, has been with short-season Staten Island and, logging a 1.71 ERA and a 2-2 record in 10 games.
