A day after trading for Erik Kratz and two days after releasing Rene Rivera, the Giants have made yet another move involving a catcher, reportedly claiming Tom Murphy from the Rockies.

Murphy, who turns 28 at the start of April, appeared in games for the Rockies in each of the past four seasons, posting a .710 OPS with 10 homers in 81 games.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic posited that the addition of Murphy (plus that of Kratz, who manager Bruce Bochy has already dubbed the backup) could make a it a “very real possibility” that the team shops catching prospect Aramis Garcia for outfield help. Garcia has subsequently been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in advance of Game 2 of the Bay Bridge Series.

Stay tuned. Baseball ops czar still has plenty of time to make moves before Opening Day arrives on Thursday.
