In the wake of Jimmy G’s 0.0 passer-rated outing on Monday Night Football in Denver, the 49ers’ face of the franchise (and largest question mark) is set to play the entire first half of the team’s Week 3 preseason meeting with the Chiefs.

“No, I would like them to get a whole half in, but sometimes halves can be 20 plays, sometimes they can be 45,” head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after practice on Thursday. “So, it’s more about the play count, but you’d like them to get a normal half in.”

Garoppolo, who saw just 11 snaps against the Broncos, was 1-for-6 for zero yards with one ugly pick mixed in.

“If they do, depending on how you start with the ball, how many series you get, if you feel good about it,” Shanahan continued. “We’d like to not put him back out in the third quarter, but if you don’t feel good and you don’t feel like you got the reps, that’s always an option.”

The 49ers visit the Chiefs on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium, the site of Garoppolo’s ACL tear last September.

“It’ll be a good stepping stone,” Garoppolo told Kansas CIty reporters on a conference call. “Definitely it’ll be a little weird getting back there, but yeah, just trying to treat it like a normal game.”

Garoppolo will likely have to make do with Geoge Kittle (calf), as he looks to get right in Kansas City.

“With him not practicing today I would be surprised if he does (play),” Shanahan said. “I haven’t decided that yet, though.”
