Jerick McKinnon’s return from a torn right ACL remains suboptimal, as Week 1 looms on the horizon.

Listen to your team news NOW.

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows has the latest injury report on McKinnon, who, now entering Year 2 in Santa Clara, has yet to step on the field for the 49ers in a regular season game.

In the absence of McKinnon, the Niners still boast a robust running backs’ room, headlined by Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert.

The 49ers have to cut down the roster to 53 players, in advance of the season opener on Sept. 9 in Tampa Bay.

The team can either put McKinnon on the season-ending injury reserve, or, put him on the roster and then place him on IR, designated to return. In the latter instance, McKinnon would be eligible to return after eight games.
