On the day the 49ers lost out in the hunt for Earl Thomas comes the report that Jimmie Ward, the not-so-popular defensive back, is returning for another season in Santa Clara.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFl Network and NFL.com, Ward, who originally landed with the Niners as the No. 30 overall pick in 2014, will be playing on a $5 million salary. Thomas, a six-time Pro Bowler, is joining the Ravens, per Schefter. Thomas, 29, will get $55 million over four seasons, including $32 million guaranteed (with $22 million coming in the first nine months).
