The pursuit of Bryce Harper, who has long been at loggerheads with his reported suitors, is reportedly drawing close to a close.

According to Matt Breen of the Philly Inquirer, Philly Daily News and Philly.com, the Phillies are “confident” they land Harper. Here’s how Breen puts it:

“The Phillies, according to a source, are confident they will sign Bryce Harper as they have ramped up their negotiations with the outfielder after being motivated by losing out on Manny Machado.”

Machado scored a 10-year,  $300 million pact with the Padres, the Giants’ divisional neighbor. Scott Boras, Harper’s rep, is “set” on besting that sum, as Breen notes.
