According to a report from TVA Sports NHL insider Renaud Lavoie, the National Hockey League is set to hold the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery on Friday, June 26. However, Lavoie also says that no date has been set yet to hold the 2020 NHL Draft.

There had been previous reports that the NHL was attempting to hold a virtual 2020 NHL Draft on June 5, before the restart of the 2019-20 season. However, that proposal was met with some pushback from general managers across the league and it fell through. The league has said that if they were to hold the NHL Draft before the 2019-20 season started up again, it would give its teams a 30 days notice of the news.

On Friday, the NHL Players' Association executive committee approved 24-team playoff format that the NHL had come up with for its Return To Play initiative. This format will see the top-24 teams in the NHL playing for the chance to win the Stanley Cup as soon as the season gets back underway later this summer. However, seven teams will miss out on the playoffs, including the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings finished the 2019-20 season with the worst overall record of 17-49-5, which is good for just 39 points in 71 games.

Here is how the draft order looks with the teams that will miss out on the 24-team playoff:

1. Detroit Red Wings
2. Ottawa Senators
3. Ottawa Senators (from the San Jose Sharks)
4. Los Angeles Kings
5. Anaheim Ducks
6. New Jersey Devils
7. Buffalo Sabres

There have been no other reports of how the NHL will format the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery, other than the report from the virtual NHL Draft earlier this month where the league has just one winner, and the winner can only move up the order a maximum of four spots.
