What makes the MLB wild-card game unparalleled theater is that it’s do-or-die after a six-month, 162-game slog.

It’s not logical but it’s entertaining.

It’s against that backdrop that Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez has made his pick for Wednesday’s showdown between the A’s and Yankees. Suffice it to say that Pedro thinks the green and gold will be visiting the Red Sox, the right-hander’s old club.

"I would say Oakland," Martinez said on NESN. "Oakland is a scary team to play right now — especially for one game. Because Oakland wasn't supposed to be there."

As Martinez noted, the A’s, with a bevy injuries to starters and a young corps of position players, aren't weighed down by expectations. Oh, and they're damn talented.

"Oakland, I think has a lot to gain, a little to lose," Martinez continued. "They're not intimidated by anybody. It doesn't matter who you throw on that mound. Those kids in Oakland have a lot of talent. They're not intimidated, and they can swing it."
