The Oakland A's will have to make do without Sean Manaea for the balance of 2018 (and then some), announcing on Tuesday morning that the starter is headed for left shoulder surgery.

The arthroscopic procedure will be performed by Dr. Neil ElAttrache at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles.  In a statement, th team said there won't be any further details from the club until the surgery is completed on Sept. 19.

Then manager Bob Melvin dropped this bomb.

Manaea, who last pitched on Aug. 24, began his season with a flourish, delivering a no-hitter against the Red Sox on April 21. The lefty had a 1.23 ERA at that early juncture in the season. The 26-year-old was 12-9 with one complete game and a 3.59 ERA (64 er, 160.2 ip) with 108 strikeouts in 27 starts for Oakland this season.
