At exactly 7:00 am on Monday morning, the dawn of the penultimate week of the 2018 MLB regular season, Baseball-Reference sent out a tweet that succinctly explained just how masterful Matt Chapman’s first full season in the green and gold has been.

The Oakland A’s third baseman is keeping MVP company.

Chapman isn’t just third in WAR among American League position players but among all position players.

Nothing better mirrors the rise of the A’s than the parallel ascension of Chapman, the resident defensive wizard. Oh, and his bat is special too.

Here’s what he’s done, in 53 games, since the All-Star break:

*1.031 OPS, .326 AVG, .642 SLG, 23 2B, 3 3B and 13 HR

Chapman won’t win the MVP. He might not win it next year, but mark it down — Sept. 17, 2018 — Matt Chapman will be the next Oakland A to win the AL MVP award.
