Way back on June 25, the Oakland A’s designated Liam Hendriks for assignment, banishing him off the 25-man roster and ultimately sending him to Triple-A.

At the time, the A’s were 41-38, 10.5 games behind the AL West-leading Astros and seven games back of the Mariners, holders of the second wild-card spot.

Fast forward to the present and Hendriks is officially the A’s opener for Wednesday’s wild-card showdown with the Yankees. Hendriks, who opened eight games for Oakland in September (after he was recalled from the minors), is headed for his biggest assignment yet.

He’ll face Luis Severino, who recorded a lone out in last year’s wild-card game, before turning things over to the rest of the staff.

Baseball czar Billy Beane has built one of the most dominant bullpens in baseball. If everything goes to plan in the Bronx, a parade of arms will follow Hendriks before Cy Young hopeful Blake Treinen closes it out.
