Kevin Durant says DeMarcus Cousins has ‘definitely surprised’ him — in a good way

Always stationed in his customary seat at the end of the Warriors’ bench, DeMarcus Cousins makes his presence known every night.

The veteran big man, recovering from a torn Achilles, does whatever he can to help, like dispensing wisdom to Damian Jones, his current fill-in.

“You could tell that he’s rooting for Damian,” Kevin Durant said after shootaround on Monday morning. “And he wants him to succeed.” That’s a sign of somebody who knows exactly who they are as a player, who’s a great teammate, who just wants to win basketball games, no matter what.”

Durant and Cousins are among the NBA’s most-fiery on-court competitors, as this picture from last Dec. 4 — when both players were ejected — clearly illustrates.

But things change, as Cousins’ attitude toward his understudy proves.

“That’s a sign of somebody who knows exactly who they are as a player, who’s a great teammate, who just wants to win basketball games, no matter what,” Durant said.

“And DeMarcus definitely surprised me when it comes to that, to be honest. Because I didn’t know he was this great of a teammate. And you could see it the way he talks to Damian and just everybody on the team — but especially Damian.’
