Kerr tells memorable Erin Popovich anecdote: ‘(She) was sort of the balance Pop needed’

Warriors head coach shares story of time Pop traded him

In the wake of the passing of Erin Popovich, the wife of Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr shared a memorable anecdote.

The story takes place when Kerr was toward the end of his playing days, a member of Popovich’s Spurs. While Kerr bonded with Pop, his wife, Margot, was close with Erin.

“Erin was sort of the balance Pop needed,” Kerr said with a laugh after Thursday’s shootaround.

“I still remember when he traded me to Portland in 2001. He called me up to tell me the news. He said, ‘I don’t think I can go home because Erin’s going to be so mad at me for trading you.’”

“She’s dealt with a lot over the last few years health-wise and has been very courageous in her battle. So we all grieve and, at the same time, try to celebrate her life and her legacy.”
