Gruden: ‘Obviously, Khalil Mack didn’t want to play here’

Raider head coach offers spirited defense of blockbuster trade

In advance of the Raiders’ Monday Night Showdown against the Rams, Jon Gruden sat down with ESPN’s Lisa Salters and did not hold back when asked about the polarizing decision to jettison Khalil Mack.

“Obviously, Khalil Mack didn’t want to play here,” Gruden said. “That’s what’s being missed here. He was under contract, Lisa.”

“He was under contract. He never showed up for an OTA. He never showed up for training camp. And it was obvious he wasn’t going to show up for the season. So, you know, don’t forget that.”

After the Raiders traded Mack to the Bears, the pass-rushing star promptly agreed to a six-year, $141 million extension with $90 million guarantee. Mack hit a different note when he was introduced in Chicago.

“We have to get ready to play and I want players that want to be here, that want to help us put this thing back in high gear.”
