Niners GM to 95.7 The Game: ‘We tried like heck to acquire Khalil Mack’

John Lynch, 49ers GM, joined “Joe, Lo & Dibs” on Tuesday morning to offer a state of the club. The boss of the football ops department discussed myriad topics, including the ongoing search to find a dynamic pass rusher.

Lynch knows that, for now, the Niners are sans a game-wrecker a la Aaron Donald or Kahlil Mack.

“Well, we’re looking for it. I think we have guys who have the potential to be that and we’re looking for that,” Lynch said on 95.7 The Game, stopping to laugh.

“I think when you’re 2-8, that’s what you’re looking for…”

Lynch explained the 49ers will pursue such a star on the trade and draft fronts before detailing the difficulty of prying away a Donald or a Mack from an NFL neighbor.

“I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but we tried like heck to acquire Khalil Mack,” Lynch said. “But it didn’t work out. But, you try by any means necessary to get it but it’s not easy.”

“Guys that are free, they never become free because they’re so coveted in this league. They’re franchise (tagged) typically or they work out a new deal.”

“So, you have to be wise in the way you construct it in terms of free agency. But the draft is the best opportunity to put game-changing type players (on the field).”

Lynch still thinks the 49ers offered a better deal than the one that ultimately netted the Bears Mack.

“I continue to (believe that),” the GM said. “That, at times, leads me to believe, were we ever in consideration? I understand the thought of sending him right across The Bay — I don’t know how that factored in — but it is what it is.”

To put Lynch's comments into context, here's the deal the Bears and Raiders ultimately agreed to:

*Bears get: Mack, a 2020 second-round round pick and a conditional 2020 fifth-round pick

*Raiders get: 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2020 third-round pick, 2019 sixth-round pick.

“The Bears have certainly benefited from adding the services of a guy like that," Lynch added. "And we move forward.”
