In the aftermath of the Raiders’ decision to send Khalil Mack to the Bears, Greg Papa joined “Joe, Lo and Dibs” to offer his thoughts on the monster trade.

Papa was on his way to the Memorial Stadium to broadcast Oklahoma’s eventual rout of Florida Atlantic when the news broke on Saturday morning.

“I could not believe it.”

Here are some of the highlights from the interview…

Papa on the idea that the Raiders also sent a second-round pick

“It’s just outrageous. What they got back and what they gave up.”

*Full deal: Bears give up up first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a third-round pick in 2020 and a sixth-round pick in 2019; Raiders give up Mack, a second-round pick in 2020 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2020

Papa on the timing of the deal and how it would have been better to make this kind of deal when teams have more flexibility:

“They traded Jon Gruden for two 1’s and two 2’s. They didn’t even get that back…

“I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why they felt they had to do it right now. The better play — if you decided we can’t pay him, we cannot as a franchise, we cannot fund the $90 million into an escrow and you have to trade him — then you do it later.”

Papa on the frustration of jettisoning a transcendent talent:

“To just let him slip through your fingertips, it’s sad. It reminds me a lot of what Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s have had to do for a long, long time.”
