On the same day the Giants whiffed on Shohei Ohtani, the club formally announced that the pursuit of Giancarlo Stanton, the reigning NL MVP, is over. Here's the official team statement:

"Our agreement with the Marlins to acquire Giancarlo Stanton subject to his waiving of the no-trade clause will not move forward and it is our understanding that the Marlins and Stanton are exploring other options.”

Giants brass, spearheaded by CEO Larry Baer, sat for a pair of meetings with Stanton's reps in Los Angeles. With the Stanton sweepstakes failing through, the Giants are already pivoting, reportedly targeting Domingo Santana and Jay Bruce, who both cleared the 30-home run plateau in 2017.
