We all have a favorite aunt or uncle, someone you may think is the coolest person ever. Growing up, my aunt would teach my sister and I cuss words, give us junk food, and teach us things our parents could not.

Now, Celtics star Kyrie Irving has become that beloved uncle.

On Friday, the movie “Uncle Drew,” was officially released in the theaters, and I’ll be honest, it’s one that I am excited to see this summer.

Being dubbed a “feature-length soda commercial,” the movie was inspired by a Pepsi web series where Kyrie is dressed as an old-time basketball blacktop legend who shows up to school the “youngbloods.” The “digital episodic series” ran for five years and now the feature-length comedy has hit the silver screen, and Irving has given his comedic chops a try.

In the film, Dax (Lil Rel Howery) drains his life savings to enter into a street ball tournament in Harlem, but after a series of unfortunate circumstances, including losing his best basketball player to his rival (Nick Kroll), Dax finds help in the long, lost legend, Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving).

Dax convinces Uncle Drew to get on the blacktop one more time all while inviting more “geriatric” players to join his team. Who are these “old-timers”? It’s an all-star cast that includes former NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, and Nate Robinson, as well as WNBA star Lisa Leslie.  There’s even some other special guest appearances from current NBA players.

The film also features Lil Rel Howery, Erica Ash, and Tiffany Haddish.

While the reviews have been mixed, it has received a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes so far, and some reviewers have said that they are pleasantly surprised with the comedy.  What I’m looking forward to most? Seeing Uncle Drew’s handles on the blacktop!

Summit Entertainment release that is produced by Temple Hill in association with PepsiCo’s Creators League Studios.
