Chris Long, the two-time Super Bowl champ, is taking takes where they’ve never gone before.

Listen to your team news NOW.

Penning a guest column for Sports Illustrated on Tuesday, Long laid out a scenario in which Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo, his former New England running mates, could end up swapping places.

For Long, the jumping off point is the long-rumored rift between Brady and football czar/head coach Bill Belichick:

“Let’s get even crazier and hypothesize that Tom would like to wear a new uniform at 43 years old. There’s only one place I could see him going — back to the Bay. And here’s how it happens…”

“Let’s say Jimmy G has a modest year (I don’t think he does) and looks like Tannehill 2.0. Next offsesaon, Brady hits the market and expresses interest in returning home to suit up for the team he adored as a teenager (in 1990). San Francisco releases Garoppolo and he ends up back in New England, where Belichick beautifully repurposes what’s perceived as damaged goods.”

It’s weird. It’s crazy. It’s outlandish.

It’s not impossible.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Brady’s freshly-signed extension automatically voids on the final day of the 2019 league year (March 17, 2020). The voidable year is means of spreading out a cap hit.

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (and many others) have noted, the 49ers can move on from Garoppolo at season’s end for a top cap hit of $4.2 million.
