Buster Posey has officially opted out of the 2020 MLB season, the catcher announced on a Friday morning Zoom call with reporters.

Posey explained the logic behind his decision:

For Posey, it was family over his job.

"From a baseball standpoint it was a tough decision," Posey said. "From a family standpoint and feeling like I'm making a decision to protect our children, I feel like it was relatively easy."

The team issued the following statement, in the wake of the news, which had been largely expected during Posey's absence from the team's summer training camp at Oracle Park:
