Asking for Brady? — John Lynch is just the exec to return the 49ers to prominence

The first sign that John Lynch was just the dude to lead the San Francisco 49ers out of the wilderness and back to relevance — and eventually excellence — came before he even secured the job as the club’s general manager.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer has never been afraid to pick up the phone and make a call. In January of 2017, he did just that, calling Kyle Shanahan, the newly-hired head coach, offering his services as GM.

The power move paid off. Lynch got the gig.

He wasn’t afraid to pick up the phone last fall either. Lynch called New England Patriots football czar Bill Belichick, the smartest man in the NFL, and asked for the damn GOAT.

Here’s how that call, which had been previosuly reported but never confirmed, went down, via Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take podcast.

"We were calling about Jimmy (Garoppolo) and we did have that conversation (about Tom Brady) and got quickly rebuffed," Lynch said.

"I figured, 'What the heck, you gotta take your shot, right? You can't score if you don't shoot.' I had to summon up the courage and Bill laughed at me and basically hung up on me. But hey, I took my shot."

Calling Belichick to ask for Brady?

That’s as bold as it gets. Lynch just doesn’t give a bleep. That’s the attitude that’s turned him into a rising executive star and made the Niners one of the leagues emerging powers.
